Her; In the flesh…

George was now taking snaps of Veronica pretending he was scrolling his phone. I have lived with this idiot for three years, I can tell when he is about to fart. This will be a long discussion in the house between me and George. She rendered me silent for a second and for that short moment it turned out to be awkward. I didn’t know what to say to her. I had so much in my mind that I wanted to know but I did not know what to ask. She gave that shy smile. That one smile where a lady knows she dressed to create attention, keep men heads turning and ladies jealous; that smile that rubs her ego for rendering you silent. I am 100% sure this sitting positions were all planned by Steve.
I turned to her friend to ease the tension around the table. I respect the different variances of melanin popping but there is this thing about me and light skin ladies that never matched. I have dated some few of them before but none worked out. Well… even dark skin ladies never worked out since I am still single.

Me; Heeey miss?

I have to stop calling every lady I talk to “miss”, but I just can’t help it. I kinda like it (forgive me married women and any other lady who didn’t like the name after I called her so).

Her; Hey Mr.

Okay, nobody called me mister before. I kinda like it too.

Me; My name Shawn, and my friend is George.
Her; I know.

Definitely did not expect that.

Me; Aaah!! Okay. Definitely didn’t think this is what you were going to say, but okay. What’s yours?
Her; Why do you wanna know? Do you have any intentions of being a part of my life? So that you can fuck it up and leave me.

She was too coy with her name. This conversation was taking a turn that I did not see coming. I wonder who hurt her. Who comes to a wedding with an ATT? So what, should we give you your daily injection to reduce it? I turned to George with a shock on my face. We stared at each other for some seconds before looking back at the lady. I didn’t know what else to ask her. I glanced back at George and winked at him with a silly grin. That was enough communication for him to understand he is the wingman in this duo. Veronica is all mine. I knew he wanted no part to do with her after that intro but I had already marked my territory with Veronica after I moved my seat closer to her. I would still make up to George one day for this.

Me; So Veronica, what have you been up to, where have you been all this time, you don’t even keep in touch with people. I thought I would see you at the dowry ceremony but after your non appearance I knew I would never lay my eyes on you again.
Veronica; I knew not about the ceremony. Steve never informed me, but I don’t blame him he explained to me what happened.
Me; So you had Steve’s contact
 never reached out?
Veronica; I never had his; I lost my phone some years back. We met in town two months ago in my endeavors and he told me everything. What I found out of place was when he invited me to the wedding the last statement he said was “Shawn is going to be there”. Is there something I should know that I don’t know?

Goosebumps filled my skin in a finger snap. Steve, what did you do?

Me; Like what?
Veronica; I don’t know, you tell me. The way he said it is what caught my attention and I am sure there is something you are not telling me.

Before I could even continue with the conversation the dance floor was already filled with people.

Veronica; Hold that thought, I’ll be back after the dance.

Phwecks!! Thanks to the dance I can take a breather. She ran to the dance floor with her friend. The look George gave me, I couldn't face him twice. As Veronica ran I shouted “come back alone and leave your friend out there”, but in my mind.

Me; So Steve is betrothed to Ann…

I tried to evade the conversation that I knew George was about to start.

George; I have been your wingman for the last two years. Never did I even once complain. No matter how “not beautiful” she is, I still stood by you. Just because that’s what a good wingman does. Today of all good days I want to complain so much, but I am in a wedding. We single people go to weddings to find other single people, but HER, she was not on the list. So I take this chance and wait, for another catch it’s just eleven, I still have so much time before the wedding ends, but you owe me.

I did stick my finger in the ant hill there.

Me; Did you get her name?
George; Miss ”know it all” is called Agnes.
Me; Mhh!! It rhymes with anger, it explains it all.
George; You are really stupid for a guy who ladies find cute.
Me; But I give you credit for even doing it. You got courage of someone who chips in the rent contribution.
George; Was that meant to be a joke, cause it’s not funny?
Me; Sorry roomie… (with a sheep smile)
George; What is wrong with you?

My lame jokes just changed the topic. I have to ask, ladies, women and girls, do you just have outfits for attending weddings only? Most of the people at the wedding were all good looking. The rest don’t even forgive me, you look so bad. Even some of the ladies I knew I had never seen them before in such outfits. I agree they are good looking.

MC; Ladies find a man and men find a lady to dance with, na usiendee mumama ama mubaba wa wenyewe.

The crowd burst out laughing.

Me; Let’s see people with their people.

Miss “Anger” (that name is not going away) came walking back to her seat with Veronica behind her. George clicked to her sight. He almost stood up and pretended to be a photographer, but my seat distracted his path.

Agnes; George, I want to dance with you.

Wait a minute. Did she just? Anger is full of surprises.

Me; Dude, how many times does a lady ask you to dance with her?

George by now wanted to dig a grave and bury me. In real sense I never meant about the dance, I just wanted George to go with Anger so I can have a talk with Veronica. We had our code of sending each other messages in our words and George understood the assignment. Come to think about it, this feels like something ladies would do. Thank God for the bro code, mostly in the chapter of wingmanship. Veronica stared straight to my eyes and with so much confidence held my hand and pulled me to the dance floor.

Veronica; I know you want to dance with me don’t pretend to be so casual and your eyes have been betraying you since you so me…
