Simple

There is something about surprises that I like, both giving and getting them. Mostly when one least expects them. Last week was my friend’s birthday. You see, with ladies, birthdays come in phases. First it starts with birthday month. One may be celebrating it on the last day of the month but once its day one of that month, we are already receiving birthday month captions on their posts. Then proceeds to birthday week. This is where things start escalating. “Birthday week” “I’m accepting gifts in all forms” “Cash and dates too”. On eve’s day, “birthday loading”. Finally, it concludes on the D-day. “It’s my birthday bitches” “keep calm cause it’s my birthday” (we have never and will never freak out cause it’s your birthday). On this day that’s when she posts screen shots of all the people who have wished her happy birthday. And this thing is getting old now. This is where all of us storm her inbox to wish her happy birthday. Men, please note, this wishes most of the times never get replied immediately. If your inbox was in the morning expect a reply either in the evening or the next day, because that also has to be screenshot on the chat screen together with the other people who texted her. Then the day after her birthday she post a photo of herself. This photo mostly was taken on her birthday after she requested for a photoshoot from one of her friends. It comes along with a caption, “I love the lady I’m becoming”.
Sorry, off topic. Yeah, last week was her birthday and I decided to do something for her. This time I decided to do something a little different. The day before her birthday I drafted her a letter. Yes, I’m still an old school guy who believes in letters in this digital era. At work I drafted a small paragraph of what I wanted to say and as soon as I was out, I got to type it and printed out a copy. Did I tell you I’m an old school guy? So I bought an envelope and addressed it to her. Again we are in the digital era so you don’t expect her to have a mail address. I went home with the letter. I’m doing things different this time. You see, I know her schedule and what time she sleeps. And since it’s on a week day I didn’t expect her to stay up late. Past midnight I got myself out of the house and called my nduthi guy. Before I got to convince him to take me to my destination at that time of the day took me time and I had to chip in more than my usual. The road is almost empty just few drunkards and other nduthi guys. Upon arrival, I slipped the letter under her door and left. Got back to my house and slept for the next day (even past midnight, it’s still same day until I sleep).
Its lunch time and I decided to call her to wish her happy birthday. So wishing her happy birthday, asking her how she has been doing… blah blah blah. I told her I was busy at work so we could meet after work for coffee just to celebrate it. She is not the clubbing lady. Furthermore, its coffee, I didn’t expect her to say no. So after work we met and just for formalities I decided to buy her a watch and earrings. Just to spice it up I added lipstick on top of the goodies. We met and found ourselves in one of the restaurants. Ordered coffee as we caught up on lost times. Gave her the presents and she was really happy about it. Then all of a sudden she was bright.
“By the way guess what?’
“What?”
“I woke up to find a surprise on my door step this morning”
I flowed along the story acting all surprised. Like its new to me. It’s been a week and she still doesn’t know who did it and I’m not willing to tell her anytime soon. That should keep her mind occupied fo a while now.

It wouldn't hurt to share...
